Australia to Offer Three Free Hours of Solar Electricity Per Day to All Households
In a remarkable milestone for renewable energy, Australia announced in November 2025 that it will start offering at least three free hours of electricity per day to all households, regardless of whether they have solar panels installed. The country has built so much solar capacity that during peak sunshine hours, there is more electricity than the grid can use.
Rather than wasting this surplus, the government decided to pass the savings directly to consumers. The initiative represents what many energy analysts are calling a "green energy dividend" — the point at which renewables become so abundant that electricity starts becoming too cheap to meter.
“The country has built so much solar capacity that during peak sunshine hours, there is more electricity than the grid can use.”
The move marks Australia's transition from one of the world's most coal-dependent nations to a renewable energy leader. Solar costs have fallen by approximately 90% in the last decade, making this kind of policy possible.
"This is what the energy transition looks like in practice," said energy analysts. "When you invest heavily in renewables, the benefits flow directly to households."
