Detroit Tool Libraries Spark Nationwide Sharing Economy Movement

Marcus Williams started lending power tools from his garage in 2021 because his neighbors could not afford their own. Five years later, the Detroit Tool Library model has been replicated in over 200 communities across 35 states. Members pay a small annual fee to borrow everything from circular saws to pressure washers, saving the average household $1,200 per year.

"Ownership is overrated when sharing works better," Williams said. The libraries have expanded beyond tools to include kitchen appliances, camping gear, and even musical instruments. A new partnership with Home Depot provides discounted inventory, and several cities have begun funding tool libraries as part of their sustainability plans. Studies show each shared tool replaces eight privately owned ones, significantly reducing waste.
