In a landmark moment for conservation, dozens of juvenile giant tortoises have been released on Floreana Island in Ecuador's Galápagos archipelago, returning the keystone species to an ecosystem it was driven from nearly 200 years ago. The release represents the culmination of decades of painstaking genetic research, breeding programs, and ecological restoration work.
The Floreana giant tortoise (Chelonoidis niger) was hunted to extinction in the early 19th century by whalers and settlers who prized the animals for their meat and oil. For generations, the species was considered lost forever. However, geneticists made an astonishing discovery: hybrid tortoises carrying Floreana genetic lineage were found on the slopes of Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island, likely descendants of tortoises thrown overboard by passing ships.

Scientists carefully selected individuals with the highest percentage of Floreana DNA and established a captive breeding program to gradually reconstitute the original species. The juvenile tortoises released represent the most genetically similar animals to the extinct Floreana tortoise that can currently be produced, each carrying a significant proportion of the original genetic material.
The return of giant tortoises to Floreana is about far more than saving a single species. As ecosystem engineers, giant tortoises play a critical role in shaping their environment — dispersing seeds, creating clearings, and maintaining the grasslands that support dozens of other endemic species. Their absence has contributed to significant ecological degradation on the island.
The release was conducted in collaboration with the Galápagos National Park and the Galápagos Conservancy, with each tortoise fitted with a tracking device to monitor its movements and health. Early signs are encouraging, with the young tortoises adapting well to their ancestral habitat and beginning to forage on native vegetation.
This project stands as a powerful example of how modern genetics and dedicated conservation can begin to reverse even the most devastating losses to biodiversity, offering hope for similar restoration projects around the world.
