Research shows the shingles vaccine may double as a heart protector, cutting major cardiac events by 46% and deaths by 66% within a year in people already at high cardiovascular risk.
A surprising discovery is giving cardiologists a powerful new tool in the fight against heart disease: the shingles vaccine. Research highlighted by Mass General Brigham and other leading medical institutions has revealed that the recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix), already widely used to prevent shingles in older adults, may provide remarkable cardiovascular protection.
The findings show that vaccination against shingles reduced major cardiac events — including heart attacks and strokes — by 46% within a year in patients who were already at high cardiovascular risk. Even more striking, cardiovascular deaths dropped by 66% in the vaccinated group compared to unvaccinated patients.

Scientists believe the connection lies in the relationship between viral infections and cardiovascular inflammation. The varicella-zoster virus, which causes both chickenpox and shingles, can remain dormant in nerve cells and periodically reactivate, triggering inflammatory responses that may destabilize arterial plaques and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. By preventing shingles reactivation, the vaccine appears to reduce this chronic inflammatory burden on the cardiovascular system.
The discovery is particularly significant because it suggests a relatively simple, safe, and already-available intervention could meaningfully reduce heart disease burden — especially among older adults who face the highest risks from both shingles and cardiovascular disease.
Cardiologists emphasize that the shingles vaccine should not replace standard heart disease treatments, but rather complement them. The findings add to growing evidence that managing viral infections is an underappreciated strategy for cardiovascular prevention.
