In a São Paulo State University trial, 43% of women taking 2,000 IU vitamin D daily alongside neoadjuvant chemotherapy saw their breast cancer disappear, versus 24% on placebo — an inexpensive boost worth larger trials.
A Daily Vitamin D Pill Boosted Breast-Cancer Chemotherapy Success in a Brazilian Trial
A randomized trial conducted at São Paulo State University's Botucatu School of Medicine and reported by ScienceDaily on April 28 suggests that a low-cost vitamin D supplement may make chemotherapy work better against breast cancer. Among women receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy — drugs given before surgery to shrink tumors — 43% of those who also took 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day showed complete pathological response, compared with 24% of those given placebo.
The study enrolled 80 women with HER2-negative breast cancer at a single Brazilian center and was published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer. Researchers note that 2,000 IU is well below the high doses typically prescribed to correct severe vitamin D deficiency, making the intervention inexpensive, accessible and easy to combine with standard care. Many breast-cancer patients are already vitamin D deficient.
“Among women receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy — drugs given before surgery to shrink tumors — 43% of those who also took 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day showed complete pathological response, compared with 24% of those given placebo.”
Lead author Dr. Eduardo Carvalho-Pessoa cautioned that the result needs to be replicated in larger, multi-center trials before clinical guidelines can change. Vitamin D's exact mechanism in chemotherapy is not yet fully understood, though it is thought to influence cell growth, immune response and inflammation pathways relevant to tumor biology.
For patients, the takeaway is hopeful but measured. Doctors recommend that anyone undergoing cancer treatment ask their oncologist about checking vitamin D levels and supplementing only under medical supervision. If confirmed by larger studies, this simple, generic pill could one day be added to the global toolkit for fighting one of the most common cancers in women.
