When a tornado bore down on an Applebee’s in Three Rivers, Michigan, worker Aubrey McKenzie spotted the funnel cloud, rushed 50 guests and staff into a windowless prep kitchen, and even pulled a man, his dog and a boy in from outside.
She Saw a Funnel Cloud and Herded 50 People to Safety as a Tornado Hit
It happened so fast there was barely time to think. At an Applebee’s in Three Rivers, Michigan, worker Aubrey McKenzie looked outside and saw a funnel cloud forming and bearing down on the restaurant. In that instant, the safety of everyone in the building became her responsibility, and she did not hesitate.
McKenzie quickly led all the guests and staff—about 50 people in total—into the prep kitchen, a windowless interior space that offered the best protection from the coming storm. But she did not stop at the people already inside. Spotting a man with a dog and a boy outside, about to be caught in the open by the tornado, she retrieved them too, pulling them through the doors to shelter just in time.
“At an Applebee’s in Three Rivers, Michigan, worker Aubrey McKenzie looked outside and saw a funnel cloud forming and bearing down on the restaurant.”
The tornado struck the brick building with full force, shattering windows and tearing up the interior. When it passed, the damage was significant—but every one of the roughly 50 people McKenzie had gathered walked away unharmed. "It hit so fast and so unexpectedly," she told Fox News 17. "I’m glad that everybody was able to get somewhere safe."
She seemed almost surprised at her own composure. "I was surprised that I was able to get everybody, and be that organized in that short amount of time," she said. There had been no drill for this, no warning beyond the cloud she happened to see. In a matter of moments, an ordinary shift turned into a test of nerve, and a single worker’s quick thinking turned a building in a tornado’s path into a place where 50 strangers survived.
