For decades, one question has hovered over the search for life beyond Earth: do rocky planets in the “habitable zone” of other stars, the region where liquid water could exist, actually hold onto atmospheres? Now, for the first time, astronomers have an answer, and it is yes. A team led by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian has detected an atmosphere around LHS 1140 b, a rocky world 48 light-years from Earth, in a discovery reported by ScienceDaily on July 21, 2026.

The signature they found is helium, streaming slowly off the planet into space. The work was led by Collin Cherubim, who earned his Harvard doctorate in Earth and planetary sciences, with co-advisors Robin Wordsworth and David Charbonneau, and was published in the journal Science on July 16, 2026. Remarkably, the discovery began not at a telescope but at a desk. Cherubim built a first-principles model of how the planet should evolve, feeding in its mass, radius, density, surface gravity, age and the X-ray output of its star, and the model predicted a helium-dominated upper atmosphere quietly bleeding away. Observations then confirmed exactly that.

Now, for the first time, astronomers have an answer, and it is yes.

The importance is hard to overstate. “An atmosphere is essential for a planet to support life as we know it,” Cherubim said. “This is the first time anyone has found an atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of another star.” Because a planet’s air shields its surface, regulates temperature and can host the chemistry of life, confirming that such worlds can retain atmospheres removes a major uncertainty in the hunt for habitable planets. The models suggest this atmosphere has persisted for more than three billion years.

LHS 1140 b is a super-Earth, considerably larger than our own planet, and it now becomes a prime target for follow-up study. Astronomers hope to search its lower atmosphere for water, carbon dioxide and other gases that could reveal whether liquid water is plausible at its surface. Whatever those next observations show, this first detection is a landmark, a reassuring sign that the ingredients for life-friendly worlds may be more common in the galaxy than we dared to assume.
