Floating Schools on Kashmir Lake Bring Education to Houseboat Children
On the serene waters of Dal Lake in Kashmir, a unique educational revolution is unfolding. Floating schools — classrooms built on traditional shikaras (wooden boats) — are bringing education to hundreds of children who live on houseboats and had no way to reach schools on land.
The project, started by local teacher Rashid Ahmed, now operates five floating classrooms serving over 200 students. Children learn reading, mathematics, and science while gently bobbing on the water. Solar panels power computers and lights.
“Floating schools — classrooms built on traditional shikaras (wooden boats) — are bringing education to hundreds of children who live on houseboats and had no way to reach schools on land.”
"These children were invisible to the education system," says Ahmed. "Now they dream of becoming doctors and engineers." The floating schools have achieved a 100% literacy rate among enrolled students. The model is being studied by education officials for replication in other water communities across South Asia.
