In a historic milestone for Paris, three swimming areas have opened in the River Seine near the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame cathedral, marking the first time Parisians can legally swim in the river in over 100 years. Swimming had been banned since the early 20th century due to severe pollution.
The reopening follows a massive 1.4 billion euro cleanup effort that included upgrading wastewater treatment plants, creating rainwater storage basins, and disconnecting thousands of illegal sewage connections. The initiative was accelerated by Paris hosting the 2024 Olympics.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo famously swam in the Seine before the Olympics to demonstrate its cleanliness. Now, ordinary Parisians and visitors can enjoy the river's waters in designated swimming zones with regular water quality monitoring.
