Tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells have reached a certified 34.85% efficiency, far surpassing the ~24% ceiling of commercial silicon panels. Companies like Oxford PV are now shipping commercial modules with efficiencies up to 29%.
The solar energy industry is on the cusp of a transformative breakthrough as tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells have reached a certified efficiency of 34.85 percent — far surpassing the approximately 24 percent practical ceiling of conventional commercial silicon panels. The record, set by Chinese solar manufacturer LONGi and certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), represents a major milestone in photovoltaic technology.
Tandem solar cells work by stacking a perovskite layer on top of a traditional silicon cell. The perovskite layer captures high-energy photons from blue and green light, while the silicon layer underneath captures the lower-energy red and infrared photons that pass through. This complementary approach allows the tandem cell to harvest a much broader spectrum of sunlight than either material could alone.
“85 percent — far surpassing the approximately 24 percent practical ceiling of conventional commercial silicon panels.”
The technology is not confined to laboratories. Companies including Oxford PV in the UK and Tandem PV in the United States are now shipping IEC-certified commercial modules with efficiencies ranging from 24.5 to 29 percent. Production lines in both Germany and China are rolling out panels that bring tandem technology to market at commercial scale.
A parallel achievement published in Nature demonstrated a flexible perovskite/silicon tandem cell reaching 33.6 percent efficiency — notable because flexible panels open up applications on curved surfaces, building facades, and portable power systems that rigid panels cannot serve.
The implications for the global energy transition are significant. Higher efficiency means more electricity generated per unit of area, reducing the land and rooftop space needed for solar installations. This is particularly important in densely populated regions where available space is at a premium, and it could make solar competitive in applications where it was previously impractical.
The rapid pace of efficiency improvements has exceeded many analysts' expectations. Just five years ago, the idea of commercial solar panels exceeding 30 percent efficiency seemed decades away. Now, with tandem technology maturing rapidly and manufacturers scaling production, solar energy is poised to become even more dominant in the global energy mix.
