The Center for Coastal Studies recorded 33 North Atlantic right whales in a single aerial survey — the most ever for January. With only 384 of these whales remaining, every sighting represents more than a tenth of the entire population.
"Seeing these critically endangered right whales on our first surveys of the New Year is a great way to start the season and leaves us hopeful for more whales returning to the area," said scientist Kate Laemmle. Researchers also spotted a rare 45-year-old male not seen in 15 years.
