Financier Ross Stevens donated 100 million dollars to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee to give athletes long-term financial security, with each receiving 200,000 dollars per Games, beginning with the 232 athletes at the 2026 Winter Games.
In the United States, Olympic and Paralympic athletes receive no government funding, relying instead on sponsorships, jobs and modest medal bonuses to chase their dreams, a reality that pushes many talented competitors out of sport simply because they cannot afford to stay. A 100 million dollar gift from financier Ross Stevens to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee aims to change that.
Under the programme, each athlete will receive 200,000 dollars for every Games in which they compete. Half is structured as a long-term benefit, deferred for 20 years after an athlete's first Olympic qualification or until age 45, whichever comes later, and the other half as a guaranteed family death benefit. The first beneficiaries are the 232 athletes who represented the United States at the 2026 Winter Games.

Stevens framed the gift as a matter of fairness and opportunity. "I do not believe that financial insecurity should stop our nation's elite athletes from breaking through to new frontiers of excellence," he said. The structure is designed to help most where help is hardest to find, particularly for athletes in smaller sports that lack professional leagues or lucrative endorsement deals.
For comparison, a US gold medallist at the Paris 2024 Games earned a bonus of 37,500 dollars, a sum that does little to offset years of training costs. By providing a substantial, guaranteed payment, the donation acknowledges a long-overlooked truth: behind every flag-bearing champion are years of sacrifice, often funded out of pocket. Stevens' gift offers these athletes something rare in their world, a measure of security to match their dedication.
