Texas A&M researchers developed a nasal spray of stem-cell–derived particles that, in animal studies, calmed chronic brain inflammation and restored memory after just two doses, with benefits lasting months.
Researchers at Texas A&M University have reported an encouraging step toward keeping the aging brain healthy: a nasal spray that, in animal studies, reversed several hallmarks of brain aging. Described on May 26, 2026, the work targets a slow, chronic kind of inflammation in the brain that builds with age and is thought to contribute to memory loss and mental fog.
The spray delivers tiny biological packages called extracellular vesicles, drawn from neural stem cells, that carry small genetic instructions known as microRNAs. Delivered through the nose, the particles bypass the blood-brain barrier and are absorbed by the brain’s resident immune cells. There, the microRNAs quiet the molecular pathways that drive chronic inflammation, helping to reset the brain toward a younger, calmer state.

The results, led by Dr. Ashok Shetty and colleagues and published in the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, were striking for their simplicity. After just two doses, treated animals showed improved memory, reduced inflammation, and restored function in their brain cells’ energy systems. The benefits emerged within weeks and persisted for months, and were consistent across both sexes, a sign that the effect was robust rather than a fluke.
It is important to be clear-eyed: this is preclinical research carried out in animal models, and much more testing will be needed before anything like it could be tried in people. Even so, the approach is genuinely hopeful. By using the body’s own cellular messengers and a delivery route as gentle as a nasal spray, the team has sketched a path toward treatments that might one day help protect memory and clarity as we grow older.
