Timor-Leste Goes From 223,000 Malaria Cases to Zero

On 24 July 2025, WHO certified Timor-Leste as malaria-free after the young nation drove cases from more than 223,000 in 2006 to zero by 2022, with no malaria deaths since 2015.

Timor-Leste, one of the world's youngest nations, has achieved something remarkable: the World Health Organization certified the country malaria-free on 24 July 2025. WHO grants the certification only when a nation proves that indigenous transmission has been interrupted for at least three consecutive years — and Timor-Leste cleared that bar decisively.

The turnaround is striking. The country recorded more than 223,000 malaria cases in 2006, when the disease was one of its leading public-health threats, and brought that number down to zero by 2022. There have been no malaria-related deaths since 2015. With this achievement, Timor-Leste becomes the third country in WHO's South-East Asia Region to be certified malaria-free.

WHO grants the certification only when a nation proves that indigenous transmission has been interrupted for at least three consecutive years — and Timor-Leste cleared that bar decisively.

The progress was built on committed leadership, strategic investment and strong community engagement, supported by a partnership with the Global Fund stretching back to 2003. "Timor-Leste's success is truly inspiring. It shows what's possible with committed leadership, strategic investment, and strong community engagement," said Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands. Encouragingly, the country has also taken ownership of its own program: more than 80% of malaria program staff once funded externally are now paid with domestic resources.

A realistic caveat remains. As Sands noted, "malaria is constantly evolving," and a malaria-free country must keep investing in surveillance, next-generation bednets and diagnostics to catch and contain any imported cases before they re-establish local transmission. The mosquitoes that spread the disease have not left the region. Still, for a nation that gained independence only in 2002 and faced enormous development challenges, eliminating one of humanity's oldest killers is a profound and hopeful accomplishment — proof that even resource-limited countries can win this fight.
