Vera C. Rubin Observatory Completed: It Will Scan the Entire Sky Every Three Days
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, one of the most ambitious astronomical projects ever built, is now operational in Chile. Equipped with the Simonyi Survey Telescope, it will scan the entire visible sky every three nights, creating the most comprehensive map of the universe ever made.
Every night, the observatory will send millions of alerts — aided by algorithms — flagging objects that move or change. Scientists will witness cosmic explosions, galaxies being born, and potentially discover new classes of astronomical objects.
“Rubin Observatory, one of the most ambitious astronomical projects ever built, is now operational in Chile.”
Named after astronomer Vera Rubin, who proved the existence of dark matter, the facility is expected to generate 20 terabytes of data per night for the next decade, representing a paradigm shift in how we study the cosmos.
