The 2026 list spotlights sodium-ion batteries, generative AI coding assistants, next-generation nuclear reactors and AI companions — each already reshaping how the world works, learns and cares for itself.
MIT Technology Review published its annual list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies for 2026 in January, naming the advances most likely to reshape lives and industries over the coming decade. This year's selection blends clean-energy hardware with fast-moving artificial intelligence, underscoring how climate and computing are now the twin engines of technological progress.
Sodium-ion batteries stand out as a breakthrough for grid storage, using cheap, abundant salt instead of scarce lithium. Generative AI coding tools, which now assist professional developers on a majority of commits, earned a place for accelerating software development and opening programming to a much wider audience. Next-generation nuclear reactors, including small modular designs, made the list as several projects moved from paper to construction and early deployment.

AI companions — conversational systems used for mental health support, learning and elder care — were also recognized, alongside cleaner steelmaking, advanced geothermal drilling, and new approaches to crop breeding that use genomics to accelerate the development of climate-resilient food. The editors emphasize that several technologies are reaching a tipping point where scale and affordability unlock impact.
The list is curated by MIT Technology Review's editors after consulting scientists, founders and investors, and it has a track record of spotting shifts before they become mainstream. For 2026, the unifying message is optimistic: many of humanity's hardest problems — decarbonizing energy, expanding access to medicine, making education more personal — now have credible technological paths forward, provided societies invest and deploy them wisely.
