What once seemed like science fiction is now providing water to thousands: atmospheric water generators (AWGs) that pull drinking water directly from humid air. These devices are being deployed in water-scarce communities across Africa, the Middle East, and South America.
The technology works by cooling air below its dew point, causing moisture to condense — similar to how water droplets form on a cold glass. Modern solar-powered AWGs can produce hundreds of liters daily with zero input other than air and sunlight.
“These devices are being deployed in water-scarce communities across Africa, the Middle East, and South America.”
In a village in Namibia, an AWG system now provides the community's entire water supply. "We used to walk hours for water that made our children sick," says village elder Grace Tjikuzu. "Now clean water comes from the sky." Organizations are scaling the technology, with plans to install thousands more units in underserved regions.
