A revolutionary eye implant has restored the ability to read to people with previously untreatable age-related macular degeneration, according to Positive News. The device was inserted under the retinas of 38 people, and when paired with specially designed video-recording glasses, the technology enabled 84% of participants to read.
"In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era," said Mahi Muqit from London's Moorfields Eye Hospital. The implant works by capturing visual information through the glasses and transmitting it directly to the retinal cells, bypassing the damaged portions of the eye.
