International Booker Prize 2026 Shortlist Celebrates Global Voices From Six Countries
The International Booker Prize has announced its 2026 shortlist, featuring six novels from six different language traditions that together represent the richness and diversity of contemporary world literature. The prestigious award, worth 50,000 pounds shared equally between author and translator, will be announced at a ceremony at Tate Modern in London on May 19.
The shortlisted works span Mandarin Chinese, German, Farsi, Bulgarian, French, and Portuguese, showcasing the vital role of literary translation in connecting global voices with English-language readers. This year's selections include "Taiwan Travelogue" by Yang Shuang-zi, translated by Lin King; "The Director" by Daniel Kehlmann, translated by Ross Benjamin; and "On Earth as It Is Beneath" by Ana Paula Maia, translated by Padma Viswanathan.

Also making the shortlist are "The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran" by Shida Bazyar, translated by Ruth Martin; "She Who Remains" by Rene Karabash, translated by Izidora Angel; and "The Witch" by Marie NDiaye, translated by Jordan Stump.
Judging panel chair Natasha Brown described the collection as works that "reverberate with history," noting that "while there's heartbreak, brutality and isolation among these stories, their lasting effect is energising." The shortlist captures moments from across the past century, weaving together personal and collective narratives that illuminate the human experience across cultures.
The International Booker Prize's equal split between author and translator reflects the growing recognition that literary translation is a creative art in its own right. Translators bring not only linguistic skill but cultural sensitivity and artistic judgment to their work.
The shortlist has generated excitement in literary circles worldwide, with readers and critics celebrating the diversity of perspectives and storytelling traditions represented. Bookshops report increased interest in translated fiction, a trend the Booker Prize has helped accelerate.
