Mexico's jaguar population saw a notable rebound in 2025, with national surveys indicating the big cat's numbers have increased for the third consecutive census period. The recovery has been driven by a combination of expanded protected biological corridors connecting fragmented habitats, community-based conservation programs that provide alternative livelihoods to rural communities, and a nationwide camera-trap monitoring network that helps track individual animals.

The Yucatán Peninsula, home to the largest jaguar population in Mexico, saw particularly strong gains. Local Indigenous communities have played a central role in the conservation effort, serving as wildlife guardians and receiving compensation for coexisting with the predators. "The jaguar's recovery shows that conservation works best when local people are at the center of the solution," said a biologist with Mexico's National Commission for Protected Areas. The country aims to double its jaguar numbers by 2030 as part of the broader Jaguar 2030 Roadmap, a pan-American initiative spanning 14 countries.
