A wave of millennial and Gen Z voters reshaped the 2025 US elections, driving turnout to its highest levels in decades, according to research from CIRCLE at Tufts University. The surge of young civic engagement was most dramatically visible in New York City, where 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory was powered by an unprecedented youth turnout.
But the trend extended far beyond New York. Political observers noted greater participation from younger voters and candidates on both sides of the aisle across the country. Some analysts are even talking of an emerging alliance between millennial and Gen Z voters that could reshape American politics for decades to come.

"What we're seeing is a generational shift in civic participation," said a CIRCLE researcher. "Young people aren't just voting — they're running for office, organizing their communities, and demanding a seat at the table."
