2026 Declared International Year of Volunteers: 2.1 Billion People Volunteer Monthly Worldwide
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2026 as the International Volunteer Year for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), shining a global spotlight on the extraordinary contribution that volunteers make to communities worldwide. The data behind the declaration is remarkable: an estimated 2.1 billion people volunteer every month across the globe, representing 34.5% of the entire working-age population.
This isn't charity at the margins — it's a fundamental pillar of how societies function. In Kenya alone, volunteers contribute an estimated 669 million hours annually, equivalent to 3.66% of the country's GDP. The country has recognized this contribution so significantly that its National Volunteerism Policy treats volunteer work as a strategic asset in national planning.
“The data behind the declaration is remarkable: an estimated 2.”
IVY 2026 aims to do more than celebrate volunteers. The initiative has three core goals: to better measure and recognize the economic and social value of volunteerism, to create more inclusive and accessible volunteering opportunities, and to strengthen the connection between volunteer action and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Countries around the world are launching creative initiatives for IVY 2026. Canada has launched "365 Stories of Civic Action" — collecting one volunteering story for every day of 2026 to build a national tapestry of community service. Communities everywhere are using #IVY2026 to share their stories on social media.
The International Volunteer Year serves as a powerful reminder that compassion and service are not rare qualities — they are woven into the fabric of daily life for billions of people worldwide, quietly building stronger, more resilient communities every single day.
