All Kids Can Play, a Phoenix-area nonprofit, covers registration fees and equipment costs so children from underserved communities can join recreational leagues in flag football, soccer and volleyball.
For many families, the cost of youth sports, registration fees, uniforms, equipment, can be enough to keep a child off the field altogether. A Phoenix-area nonprofit called All Kids Can Play is working to remove that barrier, covering those expenses so that children from underserved communities can simply show up and play.
The organisation was spearheaded by Julie Sabouni, whose family operates N Zone Sports the Valley, after a previous youth sports nonprofit ceased operations and left a gap in the community. "We wanted to step up and we wanted to help our kids come back," Sabouni said. Today the group provides access to leagues in flag football, soccer and volleyball across multiple age groups, supplying both the funds and the gear that participation requires.
“A Phoenix-area nonprofit called All Kids Can Play is working to remove that barrier, covering those expenses so that children from underserved communities can simply show up and play.”
Nicole Sanders, the volunteer and community engagement director, framed the mission plainly: "Our mission is to provide access and resources to sports to the underserved communities." The benefits, organisers say, reach well beyond exercise. Playing on a team builds confidence and motivation, increases physical activity and brings together children from different neighbourhoods who might otherwise never cross paths.
Sabouni has seen the change first-hand. "They're a lot happier because they're playing with kids that they wouldn't be able to play with before," she said. By treating sport as a right rather than a luxury, All Kids Can Play is quietly widening the circle of who gets to experience the joy, friendship and growth that come from being part of a team.
