On 23 May 2026, Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo was named the 2025-26 NBA Social Justice Champion and awarded the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy, recognising more than half a million dollars invested in youth and community programmes.
On 23 May 2026, the NBA announced that Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo had been named the 2025-26 NBA Social Justice Champion, earning the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy. He became the first Miami Heat player to win the award, which honours work that engages, empowers and advances equality for communities that have been historically under-resourced.
The recognition was rooted in a season of tangible action. Through his foundation, Adebayo led 18 social justice and community initiatives, investing more than 563,000 dollars into programmes for young people and families across South Florida. He provided mattresses, uniforms and school supplies for students at The SEED School of Miami, funded transportation so that more than 19,000 students could attend the Miami Book Fair, and donated a renovated Miami Heat-themed basketball court at the Camillus House homeless shelter.
“He became the first Miami Heat player to win the award, which honours work that engages, empowers and advances equality for communities that have been historically under-resourced.”
His efforts also addressed everyday needs, from holiday meal distributions tackling food insecurity to an annual toy drive that served more than 2,000 children. As part of the honour, the NBA pledged a 100,000 dollar donation to Adebayo charitable foundation, extending the reach of his work even further.
I accept this award not just for myself, but for every voice that has gone unheard and every person working behind the scenes to create a more just and compassionate world, Adebayo said. His message captured the spirit of the award and a wider truth in sport, that the influence athletes carry can be turned outward, toward the communities that raised them and the young people watching to see what is possible.
