On Holiday in Nashville, a British Officer Tackled an Attacker and Saved an American Cop
Sergeant Taylor Johanson, a 34-year-old police officer from Ashford, Kent, had travelled to Tennessee for a holiday with his girlfriend Emily, herself an English constable. On the evening of May 7, 2026, around 8 p.m., the couple were near an I-440 exit ramp in Nashville when they came upon a scene that no off-duty officer could ignore: a Nashville police officer pinned to the ground and being violently beaten.
The attacker, a 43-year-old man, was head-butting, punching and biting Officer Peter Kinsey while holding him down. In the struggle the assailant managed to grab Kinsey’s holstered weapon and fired a round. Johanson did not hesitate. “Natural instinct kicked in—and that fight or flight,” he later said. He rushed in, tackled the attacker and restrained him until Kinsey was able to regain control, deploy his taser and handcuff the man.
“On the evening of May 7, 2026, around 8 p.”
Nashville Police Chief John Drake had no doubt about what the visitor’s intervention meant. “I believe he likely saved our officer’s life,” he said. Kinsey, recovering from the assault, described the moment in almost disbelieving terms: a stranger thousands of miles from his own beat had “miraculously appeared” at the exact instant he needed help most.
What makes the story resonate is its quiet ordinariness. Johanson was not on duty, not in uniform and not in his own country. He was a tourist enjoying time off with the woman he loves. Yet when he saw another human being in mortal danger, the badge he carries back home turned out to be less about jurisdiction than about instinct. An ocean away from his own department, he ran toward the danger, and an American officer went home to his family because of it.
