Davis Roethler runs a window cleaning company called Window Wolf in Kansas City, Missouri. But his squeegee has become something more than a tool of the trade. Roethler seeks out small, struggling restaurants and offers to clean their windows for free, then films the experience—using a background in social media management to turn each visit into a longer-form video that tells the story of the people behind the business.

The formula has struck a chord. His videos spotlight the owners, chefs and families pouring their hopes into places that might otherwise go unnoticed, from Dunn Deal BBQ to Tasty African Food KC, Kolaches and Coffee, and Simply Grand Kitchen and Creamery. The clips rack up tens of thousands of views, and the attention spills off the screen and into the dining rooms. Some featured restaurants have seen lines forming around the block.

But his squeegee has become something more than a tool of the trade.

For at least one business, the impact may have been the difference between staying open and closing. Roethler’s feature on Kolaches and Coffee is credited with helping keep the doors open. With around 8,700 Instagram followers and growing, his free cleanings have quietly become a lifeline for owners operating on razor-thin margins.

Roethler is clear-eyed about why he does it. “When you just look at the data, opening up a restaurant, from a business standpoint, it’s a terrible idea,” he said. “There’s so much opportunity in KC to help out these small businesses.” In an industry where many owners risk everything to chase a dream, one window cleaner has found a way to give them something money can’t easily buy: a crowd at the door, and the simple recognition that their work matters.
