After heavy snow and ice hit Washington DC, heroes emerged with shovels in hand. The DC Snow Heroes program, organized by the mayor's office, sends volunteers to clear sidewalks for the elderly, disabled, and overwhelmed residents.
"As a community, we have to stick together," said volunteer David Ford. The storm dumped 10 inches of snow that quickly refroze, making it dangerous to walk. Volunteers cleared paths for residents like Shirley Thomas, who uses a crutch. "It's not too many people in the world like that," she said watching them work.
