Born with congenital heart disease, he had spent his earliest years in foster care, separated from his siblings after domestic violence shattered his family. On the day of his operation, Dr. Amy Beethe, the anesthesiologist assigned to his case, noticed something that stopped her cold: the little boy was entirely alone.
“He was sitting there all alone,” she recalled. The image stayed with her.
