When anesthesiologist Dr. Amy Beethe found her 4-year-old heart patient, True, facing surgery with no family present, she and her husband adopted him—and helped find loving homes for all five of his siblings.
A Doctor Found Her 4-Year-Old Patient Alone Before Heart Surgery—So She Adopted Him
True was four years old and about to undergo seven hours of open-heart surgery at Children’s Nebraska in Omaha. Born with congenital heart disease, he had spent his earliest years in foster care, separated from his siblings after domestic violence shattered his family. On the day of his operation, Dr. Amy Beethe, the anesthesiologist assigned to his case, noticed something that stopped her cold: the little boy was entirely alone.
“He was sitting there all alone,” she recalled. “It took me back that this 4-year-old was going to go through heart surgery and nobody was there.” The image stayed with her. Amy and her husband Ryan were already raising six children of their own, but they could not let go of the thought of a child facing the most frightening day of his life with no one to hold his hand. They decided to adopt True.
“Born with congenital heart disease, he had spent his earliest years in foster care, separated from his siblings after domestic violence shattered his family.”
Then they learned True had five siblings, scattered and at risk of being separated forever, living with their grandmother in the aftermath of the family’s collapse. What began as one act of love became a coordinated effort to keep the children connected. Amy’s sister adopted one sibling. Her sister-in-law’s family took in two more. A coworker adopted another two. The Beethes themselves also adopted True’s sister, Laney. By August 2023, all six adoptions were official.
Today the siblings remain part of one another’s lives, woven into an extended family that chose them deliberately. What could have been six children lost in the system instead became six children claimed by people who refused to look away. Dr. Beethe had simply done her job that morning—keeping a frightened boy safe through surgery. But she saw a child who needed more than medicine, and she answered with a family that would not let him face anything alone again.
