FDA Approves Foundayo, the First Daily GLP-1 Pill for Weight Loss

On 1 April 2026, the FDA approved Eli Lilly’s Foundayo (orforglipron), a once-daily oral GLP-1 for adults with obesity — a needle-free option that, in the ATTAIN-1 trial, helped people lose an average of 12.4% of their body weight.

On 1 April 2026, Eli Lilly announced that the US Food and Drug Administration had approved Foundayo (orforglipron), the first once-daily oral GLP-1 medicine cleared for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or who are overweight with a weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Until now, the most effective GLP-1 weight-loss medicines have all been injections, and the arrival of a simple daily pill marks a meaningful shift in how this care can reach people.

Foundayo stands apart for its convenience. Lilly describes it as the only GLP-1 weight-loss pill that can be taken any time of day, with or without food or water restrictions. That ease matters, because many people are uneasy with needles or find injectable routines hard to sustain. A small-molecule pill that can be manufactured at scale also opens the door to wider supply than injectables have managed.

The approval rests on the Phase 3 ATTAIN program. In the 72-week ATTAIN-1 trial, participants taking the highest dose lost an average of 27.3 pounds, or 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 2.2 pounds (0.9%) on placebo. Counting everyone regardless of whether they finished, the average loss was about 25 pounds (11.1%) versus 5.3 pounds (2.1%) with placebo. “As a convenient, once-daily oral pill that delivers meaningful weight loss, this is obesity care designed for the real world,” said Lilly chair and CEO David A. Ricks.

A few caveats are worth keeping in view. Like other GLP-1 medicines, orforglipron is meant to be used with diet and exercise, not on its own, and gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea are common as the body adjusts. It is approved for weight management, not yet for type 2 diabetes, though Lilly says it plans a separate diabetes filing. Even so, for the millions who have struggled to access injectable options, a once-daily pill that delivers double-digit weight loss is a genuinely hopeful step toward making effective obesity care simpler and more widely available.
