Hours before being selected number one overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, quarterback Fernando Mendoza pledged 500,000 dollars to the National MS Society and launched a family fund honouring his mother Elsa, who has lived with multiple sclerosis for 18 years.
Just hours before he heard his name called first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, quarterback Fernando Mendoza chose to focus on something far bigger than football. He announced a personal pledge of 500,000 dollars to the National MS Society and the creation of the Mendoza Family Fund, dedicated to accelerating progress toward a world free of multiple sclerosis.
The cause is deeply personal. Mendoza mother, Elsa, has lived with MS for 18 years, and the donation will help fund research at the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine. This fund is about my mom and the millions of people living with MS, Mendoza said. My mom has taught our family strength, resilience, and positivity.

The pledge builds on years of grassroots fundraising by Mendoza and his brother, who had already raised more than 360,000 dollars through creative campaigns, including special menu items at restaurants near the colleges where they played. Rather than attend the glitzy draft ceremony, Fernando chose to stay home in Miami alongside his mother, for whom travel would have been difficult.
In a moment that for many athletes is about contracts and spotlights, Mendoza turned the attention outward. Being the first pick guarantees fame and a large rookie contract, yet his decision to lead with generosity reframed the occasion entirely. His gesture stands as a reminder that the platforms sport provides can be used to lift up others, and that the people we love often shape our greatest sense of purpose long before the cameras arrive.
