The Global Ocean Treaty has become law after 79 nations ratified the landmark agreement. The treaty provides a legal framework to protect international waters, where currently only 1% is protected.
"This is the most significant victory for ocean protection and restoration I have ever witnessed," said Greenpeace's Ariana Densham. The treaty could establish the largest network of ocean sanctuaries in history.
