When 14-year-old Sofia-Ann suffered an epileptic seizure underwater at a beach in Wales, her 12-year-old friend Tamika grabbed the only part of her she could reach—her hair—and hauled her back to shore. Doctors drained seawater from Sofia-Ann’s lungs, but she survived.
A 12-Year-Old Grabbed Her Friend by the Hair and Pulled Her From the Sea—Saving Her From Drowning and a Seizure
During a late-May heat wave, a group of teenagers went swimming off Pensarn beach in Conwy, on the coast of Wales. It should have been an ordinary summer day. Instead, three of them found themselves cut off from the beach by the rising tide, and the water quickly turned dangerous.
As they struggled, 14-year-old Sofia-Ann went under—and beneath the surface she suffered an epileptic seizure, leaving her limp and unresponsive in the water. For most people, even most adults, that is the kind of moment where panic takes over. But her 12-year-old friend Tamika did not freeze. She reached for the only part of Sofia-Ann she could grasp—her hair—and, refusing to let go, dragged her friend back toward the shore.
“It should have been an ordinary summer day.”
The coastguard had already been alerted that three teenagers were in trouble, but it was Tamika's split-second decision that made the difference. Sofia-Ann was rushed to the hospital, where doctors drained seawater from her lungs. It had been a terrifyingly close call, but she survived, thanks to a friend who was smaller than her yet braver than the sea.
For Sofia-Ann's mother, Jade McKenna, there are no words big enough for what Tamika did. "I'm so grateful for Tamika," she said. "She put herself in more danger to save Sofia-Ann—she's my little hero." Tamika's own mother, Shantika, shared in the pride of watching a child act with a courage that many grown-ups never find. In a single, instinctive gesture—one small hand closing around a fistful of hair—a 12-year-old girl refused to let her friend slip away, and gave two families their daughters back.
