Team IMPACT, a Boston-based nonprofit, is celebrating 15 years of matching children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, having connected more than 4,500 young people with over 112,500 student-athletes across 850 schools.
A nonprofit built on a simple idea, that no child should be sidelined by illness or disability, is marking a remarkable milestone. Team IMPACT, founded in Boston in 2011, is celebrating 15 years of pairing children who face serious illness and disability with college athletic teams, welcoming them as full members of the squad.
The numbers tell part of the story. Over a decade and a half, the organisation has matched more than 4,500 children with college teams at over 850 schools across all 50 states, engaging more than 112,500 student-athletes along the way. For the children, joining a team means far more than watching games. They attend practices, share team dinners, take part in campus life and, above all, form genuine friendships with athletes who become mentors and friends.

The benefits flow in both directions. The young members gain confidence, structure and a powerful sense of belonging at a time when illness can feel isolating, while the student-athletes often describe the experience as one of the most meaningful of their college years, broadening their perspective and deepening their sense of responsibility to others.
Fifteen years ago, we set out with a simple but powerful belief that no child should ever be sidelined by illness or disability, the organisation chief executive said. As Team IMPACT looks back on its first decade and a half, its growth points to a quietly transformative model, one that uses the structure and camaraderie of sport not to chase records but to build community, and to remind thousands of children that they are valued members of a team that has their back.
