Mail carrier Deanna Chatman noticed a faint cry for help during a Missouri snowstorm and found a 96-year-old neighbor with a shattered pelvis in the snow — a rescue her supervisors call "just what a mail carrier does."
Deanna Chatman was delivering mail on her usual route in Maryland Heights, Missouri on December 1, 2025, when a heavy snowstorm swept through. Above the wind, she heard a faint call for help. Following the sound, she found 96-year-old Lucille lying in the snow behind her home, unable to get up after a fall that had shattered her pelvis.
Chatman, a six-year USPS mail carrier, stayed with the woman and kept her warm while calling 911. Paramedics said that given the temperature and the length of time Lucille had been down, Chatman's attention almost certainly saved her life. Lucille was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery and began a long recovery.
“Above the wind, she heard a faint call for help.”
In a local interview, Chatman downplayed the story, saying it was part of the job: "You get to know the people on your route. When something feels off, you check." USPS publicly honored her with a letter of commendation and highlighted her as an example of how a familiar postal worker can serve as an informal safety net in neighborhoods where many older residents live alone.
The episode struck a chord during a season when stories of neighbors helping neighbors help remind people what community looks like. Lucille's family says they plan to keep in touch with Chatman for years to come, and Chatman says she now checks even more carefully on the older residents along her route, especially when the weather turns.
