One of the world's great museums has opened a major new home in east London. The V&A East Museum welcomed the public on 18 April 2026 in Stratford, part of the East Bank cultural district within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, extending the reach of the Victoria and Albert Museum to communities that have historically been underserved by Britain's largest cultural institutions.
At the heart of the new museum are two free permanent galleries called "Why We Make," which together display more than 500 objects drawn from the V&A's vast holdings of art, architecture, design, performance, and fashion. The galleries explore the universal human impulse to create, placing works from across the globe and across history side by side so visitors can trace the connections between makers separated by oceans and centuries.
“The V&A East Museum welcomed the public on 18 April 2026 in Stratford, part of the East Bank cultural district within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, extending the reach of the Victoria and Albert Museum to communities that have historically been underserved by Britain's largest cultural institutions.”
The opening exhibition, "The Music is Black: A British Story," charts 125 years of Black music-making in Britain, weaving together personal artifacts and newly acquired photographs, including Joan Armatrading's childhood guitar. Designed by architects O'Donnell + Tuomey, the building joins V&A East Storehouse, which opened nearby in May 2025 and quickly proved a hit, averaging around 60,000 visitors a month with its unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the collection.
Director Gus Casely-Hayford described the project as a museum created "with and for our audiences, as a welcoming space for all, embedded in east London." That ethos runs through the whole undertaking, from free admission to partnerships with neighboring East Bank institutions such as the BBC, Sadler's Wells East, and London College of Fashion. By planting a world-class museum in a part of the capital long overlooked by the cultural establishment, the V&A is betting that great art and design belong to everyone, and that opening the doors wide is the surest way to inspire the next generation of makers, designers, and dreamers.
