Syrian Refugee Doctor Who Arrived with Nothing Opens Free Clinic, Serves 10,000 Uninsured Patients in Berlin
Dr. Ahmad Nasser arrived in Berlin in 2015 as a refugee from Aleppo with his medical degree unrecognized, limited German, and no certainty about his future. Eleven years later, he has been awarded Germany's Federal Cross of Merit for establishing a free clinic that has treated more than 10,000 uninsured patients — predominantly refugees, undocumented migrants, and homeless individuals who fall through the gaps of Germany's healthcare system.
The journey was far from straightforward. Despite 15 years of surgical experience in Syria, Nasser had to pass a series of rigorous requalification examinations, learn German to medical proficiency, and complete a two-year supervised practice period before he could practice independently. He worked as a hospital orderly while studying, often completing his shifts and then attending language classes until midnight.

After qualifying, Nasser worked at a Berlin hospital for three years before recognizing a persistent gap: thousands of people in the city had no health insurance and no way to access medical care. He began seeing patients in his apartment on weekends, and word spread rapidly through refugee communities.
In 2023, with donations from colleagues and a small grant from a Berlin foundation, he opened a proper clinic in the Neukölln district. The clinic now operates five days a week with a volunteer team of 22 medical professionals — many of them refugees themselves from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine — providing general medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and mental health services.
The clinic's approach goes beyond treating symptoms. A team of social workers helps patients navigate the bureaucratic process of obtaining health insurance, with approximately 40 percent of patients eventually transitioning into the regular healthcare system.
"I know what it feels like to need help and not know where to turn," Nasser said when receiving the award at the Bellevue Palace. "This clinic is my way of saying thank you to the country that gave me a second chance."
