A solar revolution is happening on European balconies. Compact, plug-in solar panels that attach to balcony railings are giving apartment dwellers access to renewable energy for the first time. Over 500,000 of these systems were installed in Germany alone in 2023.
The panels simply plug into a regular outlet, and any excess power flows backward through the meter, reducing electricity bills. No electrician, rooftop access, or landlord permission required. A typical two-panel system costs around €400-800 and can generate 10-20% of an average household's electricity.

"This democratizes solar energy," says energy analyst Maria Schmidt. "Renters have been locked out of the clean energy transition until now." Countries including Austria, France, and the Netherlands are updating regulations to make balcony solar even easier to install.
