When Their Bus Driver Lost Consciousness, Five Students Took the Wheel and Saved Everyone

On an ordinary afternoon in Hancock County, Mississippi, a routine school bus ride turned into an emergency in seconds. Driver Leah Taylor, behind the wheel with a busload of children, suffered a severe asthma attack and lost consciousness. The bus began to veer off the road with no adult able to control it—a situation that could have ended in disaster.

What happened next was a small miracle of teamwork. Five middle-school students reacted almost in unison. Jackson Casnave grabbed the steering wheel as the bus drifted off course. Sixth-grader Darius Clark reached the brakes and pumped them in intervals to slow the vehicle. Eighth-grader Kayley Clark dialed 911 to summon help. Destiny Cornelius noticed Taylor reaching for her medication and tried to assist her, while McKenzie Finch propped up the driver’s head, helping her slowly regain awareness.

Leah Taylor, recovering afterward, could hardly find words for what the students had done. “I can’t thank these students enough for saving everybody’s life, because it could have turned out so much worse,” she said.
