A Principal Tackled an Armed Intruder—Then His Students Crowned Him Prom King
On an April morning in 2026, security footage at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma captured a scene every school dreads. A former student, Victor Hawkins, walked into the building carrying a handgun and pointed it at students gathered in the lobby. In the seconds that followed, the fate of dozens of young people hung in the balance.
Principal Kirk Moore did not retreat to safety. He rushed out of his office and straight at the gunman, tackling him to the ground while another staff member moved in to pull the weapon away. In the struggle Moore was shot, and he was airlifted to the hospital. But the intruder had been stopped before he could open fire on the children in the lobby.
“A former student, Victor Hawkins, walked into the building carrying a handgun and pointed it at students gathered in the lobby.”
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was unequivocal about what the staff had done. "The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives," said spokesman Hunter McKee. Hawkins was jailed and scheduled to stand trial in May on firearms and shooting charges, while Moore began his recovery.
The students decided their principal deserved more than gratitude. Later that month, at their prom, they crowned Kirk Moore as prom king, welcoming him with a wave of applause from the very teenagers he had shielded. It was an unlikely title for a school administrator—but in their eyes, no one had earned it more. A man who had run toward danger for them was honored, in the gentlest way a high school knows how, as the hero of the night.
