At a lake near Everett, Washington, 13-year-old Gauge Bryant dove about ten feet under a dock, found an unresponsive 11-year-old who had been submerged for minutes, and brought him to the surface in time for rescuers to revive him.
A 13-Year-Old Dove Beneath a Dock and Pulled a Drowning Boy Back to Life
It was just before 3 p.m. on a July afternoon at Silver Lake, inside Thornton A. Sullivan Park in South Everett, Washington, when an 11-year-old boy slipped off a dock and disappeared under the water. By the time anyone realised what had happened, witnesses said he had been submerged for roughly six minutes—long enough that the situation had turned from frightening to dire.
Gauge Bryant, a 13-year-old from Sedro-Woolley, had arrived at the park earlier than planned with his aunt to meet a friend. When he understood that a child was missing beneath the surface, he dove down about ten feet under the dock. There, in water tangled with seaweed, he found the boy’s unresponsive body and pulled him back up to the air.

On shore, Gauge began chest compressions until three nurses who happened to be at the park took over and continued CPR. When the Everett Fire Department arrived, crews were able to restore the boy’s pulse. The quick chain of help—a teenager who acted without hesitation, bystanders with medical training, and arriving firefighters—gave the child a chance he might not otherwise have had.
The fire department later presented Gauge with a commemorative coin and an official department shirt, calling his actions “heroic for sure.” Gauge himself described the moment less as bravery than as being in the right place at the right time. “Too many things that made it where I was there at that right time and I was able to do something,” he said. For a boy who had simply shown up early to meet a friend, it was a reminder that the line between an ordinary day and saving a life can be a single decision to dive in.
