A landmark study published in Nature Mental Health in April 2026 drew on 122 experts across 11 disciplines to reach the first international consensus on positive mental wellbeing, identifying six essential elements.
For decades, mental health care has focused mostly on treating illness — anxiety, depression and other disorders. Far less agreement existed about what positive mental wellbeing actually looks like, which made it hard to measure or to help people thrive rather than merely cope. A landmark study published in Nature Mental Health on 16 April 2026 set out to close that gap, and its conclusion is quietly uplifting: experts around the world can agree on what it means to be mentally well.
The research gathered 122 experts across 11 disciplines to build the first international consensus on positive mental wellbeing. Rather than treating wellbeing as a single feeling, the study frames it as a combination of how we feel, how we function and how we connect with others. From that work emerged six essential elements: meaning and purpose, life satisfaction, self-acceptance, strong relationships, autonomy, and happiness.

The researchers were careful to distinguish these core elements from their drivers. Factors such as income, housing and physical health matter enormously, but the study treats them as things that support wellbeing rather than define it. “Positive mental health isn’t a single feeling, but a combination of how we feel, how we function and how we connect with others,” said Dr Matthew Iasiello of the University of Adelaide, one of the researchers, alongside Professor Lindsay Oades of the University of York.
A shared definition may sound abstract, but it has real practical value. With a common framework, clinicians, schools, employers and governments can measure wellbeing consistently, design programs that build it and track whether they are working — shifting the focus from simply treating illness toward helping people flourish. As with any consensus study, the framework will need testing across cultures and refining over time. But agreeing, at last, on what good mental health means is a meaningful first step toward helping more people reach it.
