Anonymous Donors Hand Each Graduating Law Student $10,000: “The Room Went Nuts”
Graduating from law school usually means stepping into a career while shouldering significant debt. For the class of 2026 at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law, that calculus changed in a single afternoon. On March 31, 2026, the 154 graduating students learned that anonymous donors had given nearly $1.6 million to be divided evenly among them—$10,000 for each graduate.
Students had been told only that there would be a special surprise they would not want to miss. When the announcement came, the response was immediate and overwhelming. “The room just went nuts,” said Jack Phillips, president of the Student Bar Association. “People were screaming and crying and clapping and hugging.”

The donors chose to remain anonymous, motivated, the school said, by their belief in the law school and its mission. Dean Christiana Ochoa noted that nothing quite like it had happened before. “The law school has never had a gift from which our students benefit to this magnitude directly,” she said. Beyond the immediate relief, she framed the gift as a kind of freedom: flexible support that could let new graduates pursue meaningful public-interest or pro bono work, rather than feeling driven solely toward the highest-paying jobs to service their debt.
For the graduates themselves, the meaning was harder to overstate. “For a lot of people, this was a life-changing gift,” said graduating student Gerry Regep. The donation, reported by the Indiana Daily Student on April 6, 2026, was a reminder that generosity at scale does not have to come with a name attached—and that an anonymous act of giving can ripple outward through the careers and choices of an entire graduating class.
