Most people who donate a kidney while still alive do so for a relative or a close friend. Jesse Eisenberg did something far less common. On December 30, 2025, the Academy Award–nominated actor and filmmaker donated one of his kidneys at NYU Langone Health to a recipient he had never met and may never know, an act doctors call a nondirected or altruistic donation.
Eisenberg has said the idea first occurred to him about a decade ago. He once reached out to an organisation but never received a response, and the thought lingered until a doctor friend pointed him toward the transplant team at NYU Langone. From his first confidential conversation to the surgery itself was a matter of months, including a thorough medical and psychological evaluation before he was cleared and matched to someone on the waiting list.
“Jesse Eisenberg did something far less common.”
He has been candid that the cost to him was modest compared with the gift. “To me, it was a no-brainer,” he said. “My sacrifice was a brief hospital stay, a week of discomfort, and five weeks of not picking up my kid.” Reflecting on his recovery, he added, “My life is completely as it was before I donated. I don’t even notice my scars anymore,” and went so far as to say, “I wish I had more kidneys to give.”
By speaking openly about the experience, Eisenberg hoped to demystify a procedure that thousands of people on transplant lists are waiting for. Living donors can dramatically shorten that wait, and a single nondirected donation can sometimes trigger a chain of further transplants. “They make you feel like what you are doing matters,” he said of the care team, “because they recognise that you are filling a great need.” His message to anyone curious was simple: if you like the idea of extending somebody’s life, it is worth considering.
