World's Largest Illustration Museum to Open in London

London is preparing to welcome the world's largest space dedicated to illustration. The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, the realization of a vision held by the beloved British illustrator for some two decades, is set to open in 2026 in Clerkenwell, central London, becoming the United Kingdom's only permanent home for the art form.

The centre occupies the grounds of an 18th-century waterworks, including a Grade II-listed Engine House, being sensitively restored by Tim Ronalds Architects. The historic site, long hidden from view, will be opened to the public for the first time, pairing heritage conservation with a new cultural destination. Visitors will find three galleries presenting a programme of changing exhibitions, alongside learning spaces and newly created public gardens.

Illustration is among the most widely seen yet least celebrated of art forms, shaping the picture books of childhood, the covers of novels, comics, posters, and countless images that fill everyday life. Until now, the UK has lacked a permanent institution devoted to it. The centre grows out of the earlier House of Illustration, which operated from a temporary home in King's Cross between 2014 and 2020 before the search for a lasting base.

Quentin Blake, best known for his exuberant, instantly recognizable drawings and his long collaboration with author Roald Dahl, has championed the project as a way to give illustration the dedicated home it deserves and to support other artists working in the field. The opening exhibitions are set to include a showcase of contemporary illustrators exploring themes such as identity and mental health, signaling an institution looking firmly to the future as well as honoring its founder.

By creating a permanent stage for illustration, the centre aims to celebrate the artists who shape how we see stories and ideas, to inspire new generations of makers, and to invite the public into the craft and joy of drawing. For a discipline that touches almost everyone yet is rarely given pride of place, the opening represents a long-awaited moment of recognition, and a welcoming new cultural landmark for London and beyond.
