Astronomers confirmed GJ 887 d, a super-Earth with about 6 Earth masses orbiting in the habitable zone of a nearby red dwarf star, making it the second-nearest known habitable-zone exoplanet.
Astronomers have confirmed the existence of GJ 887 d, a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star GJ 887, located just 10.7 light-years from our solar system. With a minimum mass of about 6 Earth masses and a 51-day orbital period, the planet sits in the region where liquid water could potentially exist on its surface.
The discovery was made using data from the Very Large Telescope and La Silla Observatory in Chile, and the findings were published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. GJ 887 d is now the second-nearest known exoplanet in a habitable zone, after Proxima Centauri b at 4.2 light-years.
“7 light-years from our solar system.”
What makes GJ 887 particularly interesting as a host star is that it is unusually quiet for a red dwarf. Many red dwarfs produce intense stellar flares that could strip away a planet's atmosphere, but GJ 887 shows relatively low activity levels, potentially improving the chances that its planets could retain atmospheres.
The confirmation required years of careful observation to separate the planet's signal from stellar noise. The research team used advanced radial velocity techniques to measure tiny wobbles in the star caused by the gravitational pull of its orbiting planets.
This discovery adds to the growing catalog of potentially habitable worlds in our cosmic neighborhood and underscores that Earth-like conditions may be more common than previously thought. Future telescopes, including the Extremely Large Telescope under construction in Chile, could potentially characterize the atmosphere of GJ 887 d within the next decade.
