Global Ocean Cleanup Initiative Reaches Halfway Mark With 100,000 Tonnes Removed

The Ocean Cleanup and partner organizations announce they have removed 100,000 tonnes of plastic from the world's oceans, halfway to their 2030 target.

The global effort to rid the oceans of plastic pollution has reached a major milestone. A coalition led by The Ocean Cleanup has now extracted 100,000 tonnes of debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and four other major accumulation zones, putting the initiative on track to meet its 200,000-tonne target by 2030. New autonomous surface vessels powered by solar and wave energy have tripled collection rates since 2024.

"Technology alone won't solve this, but it gives us a fighting chance," said founder Boyan Slat. The collected plastic is being recycled into durable building materials through a partnership with BASF, generating revenue that funds continued cleanup operations. Meanwhile, 60 countries have now enacted single-use plastic bans, and global plastic production fell for the first time last year.
