Cultivated meat has crossed the affordability threshold years ahead of schedule. Upside Foods and GOOD Meat announced that their lab-grown ground beef products are now available at $5.99 per pound at Walmart, Kroger, and Whole Foods — matching the average price of conventional ground beef. The price collapse was driven by breakthroughs in bioreactor scaling and growth-media recycling that cut production costs by 90% in just two years.

"We always said the question was when, not if," said Upside Foods CEO Uma Valeti. "Turns out the answer was sooner than anyone expected." The products are identical to conventional beef at the cellular level but require 92% less land, 65% less water, and produce 78% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Early sales data shows strong consumer uptake, particularly among environmental-conscious millennials and Gen Z shoppers who previously avoided meat alternatives due to taste concerns.
