988 Mental Health Hotline Handles 5 Million Calls in First Year, Helping Teens Most
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, launched in July 2022, has been a resounding success. In its first year, the hotline handled over 5 million contacts from people in crisis — a 40% increase from the previous system.
Most encouragingly, teenagers represent the fastest-growing demographic reaching out for help. The three-digit number makes it easier to remember and access than the previous 10-digit hotline. Counselors are available 24/7 via call, text, or chat, and specialized services exist for veterans and Spanish speakers.
“In its first year, the hotline handled over 5 million contacts from people in crisis — a 40% increase from the previous system.”
"We're seeing people reach out earlier in their crisis, which leads to better outcomes," said a SAMHSA representative. The success demonstrates that reducing barriers to mental health support saves lives.
