Astronomers Confirm Super-Earth in Habitable Zone Just 10.7 Light-Years Away

Astronomers have confirmed the existence of GJ 887 d, a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of the red dwarf star GJ 887, located just 10.7 light-years from Earth. The discovery, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, makes it only the second known habitable zone planet within 10 light-years of our solar system, after Proxima Centauri b.

Using high-precision spectrographs on the Very Large Telescope and La Silla Observatory in Chile, an international team of researchers detected not three but four — and possibly five — exoplanets orbiting the star. The outermost planet, GJ 887 d, lies within the habitable zone and has a minimum mass exceeding six Earth masses.

What makes this discovery particularly exciting is the nature of the host star itself. GJ 887 is remarkably quiet for a red dwarf, with minimal stellar flares and activity. This stability means that any atmosphere on GJ 887 d would be less likely to be stripped away by stellar radiation, significantly improving the prospects for habitability.

The planet takes approximately 50.8 days to complete one orbit and sits about 0.212 astronomical units from its star. While its exact composition remains unknown, its mass suggests it could be a rocky world with a substantial atmosphere.

At just 10.7 light-years away, GJ 887 d is one of the most promising targets for future atmospheric characterization with next-generation telescopes. Scientists hope to use the James Webb Space Telescope and upcoming Extremely Large Telescope to search for biosignatures in its atmosphere.

The confirmation of this nearby habitable zone world adds to the growing evidence that potentially habitable planets may be far more common than once thought, bringing us one step closer to answering the question of whether we are alone in the universe.
