The Australian Institute of Marine Science reports that coral cover in the Great Barrier Reef's northern third has reached 39%, the highest in 12 years, driven by successful water quality programs and favorable ocean conditions.
Great Barrier Reef Records Highest Coral Cover in Northern Section in Over a Decade
The Australian Institute of Marine Science has released its annual monitoring report showing that coral cover in the northern third of the Great Barrier Reef has reached 39 percent, the highest level recorded in that section since monitoring intensified 12 years ago. The recovery marks a significant milestone for the world's largest coral reef system.
The improvement is attributed to a combination of factors including several years of reduced cyclone activity in the northern section, coordinated water quality improvement programs that have cut sediment and nutrient runoff from agricultural land, and natural resilience of coral species that survived previous bleaching events.
“The recovery marks a significant milestone for the world's largest coral reef system.”
Dr. Britta Schaffelke, who leads the monitoring program, noted that the recovering corals include both fast-growing branching species and slower-growing massive corals that form the backbone of reef structure. This diversity of regrowth suggests a more robust recovery than previous rebounds that were dominated by a single coral type.
The report also highlighted the success of crown-of-thorns starfish control programs. These voracious coral predators had been responsible for significant coral loss in previous decades, but targeted culling efforts across more than 300 reef sites have kept populations below damaging thresholds for three consecutive years.
While researchers caution that the reef remains vulnerable to marine heatwaves driven by climate change, the data demonstrates that local conservation measures can meaningfully support reef recovery when conditions allow. The findings are being used to guide a new A$1.2 billion investment in reef protection announced by the Australian government.
International coral scientists have noted that the Great Barrier Reef recovery provides a model for other reef systems worldwide, demonstrating that combining pollution reduction, predator control, and strategic reef restoration can produce measurable results even in the context of global ocean warming.
